Raffles Town Club Dinner and Dance

Placing thirty-two people in one composition is not an easy task. I won’t encourage it but since this is for a group of happy people from a close-knit organisation bidding farewell to their beloved boss, well I guess I’ll give it a shot. To my surprise the A2 size black and white caricatures turned out well, reflecting the warmth of their working environment and an endearing gratitude to their boss.

From Kamal, Ruoshi, Mahsuri and Budiman: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Spider man spinning his web. piss!

Mama with milk in her breasts and guts in her pens (no pun intended)!

The wide-eyed charmer

The artist and his usual stuck-up look (oops!)

just contended to see you draw.

Is this a fantasy island in your dreams?

Must practise drawing egg like young Da Vinci did.

oops! yOu caught me doodle again yaH?

ok, I am all smiles for your camera.

Continue with my drawing.
Some nice mornings my two sons - Mahsuri (Ma Ning) and Budiman (Ma Jing) spent together in the month of November…One of the fun things beside wrestling with each other is to doodle together… Here are some photos:

(Ma Jing): Let me see what you are drawing…

(Ma Jing): I help you with this stroke lah…

(Ma Ning): Don’t take my pen, I am concentrating on my observation studies.

(Ma Jing): Whoa! That baby girl “ho lang” (means “very pretty” in Cantonese) leh…

(Ma Jing): hiaz… i have been posing for one hour and he is still drawing my hair….
(Ma Ning): ok, ok, finishing soon, have more patience mah…

(Ma Ning): wah, your clothes have a lot of pattern leh…wasting a lot of time drawing them…can ask mommy to change to a plain one for you?

(Ma Ning): Ayah (Daddy) says i must talk to my model while I draw him, so that he will feel at ease.
(Ma Jing): Yawn…I am too at ease until I wanna fall asleep liao….
It was a posh but relaxing experience for me to be doing caricatures at a Christmas party for the highly-valued customers of Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC premier banking clients). The party was held at the showroom of Reflections@Keppel, the upcoming prestigious waterfront condominium designed by famous architect, Daniel Libeskind. There were LIVE jazz band, singer crooning softly, free-flowing of premium red and white French wines, and the service of three caricaturists (Wilson, Kamal and myself) who each wore a colourful beret provided by the event planners. The guests were having a good time and so did we. Overall, it was a great assignment for all of us.

For this company dinner, I did 60 caricature faces in an hour! The caricatures done here are on smaller and simpler format because they are done for making into keychains. My speed is about 1 min for each person. The bosses of the company are Japanese. They are very friendly and candid to the drawings. It was fun drawing them.

One night, as I was busy helping Kamal with colouring for the ABN-Amro caricatures, I received a call from my dear friend Siow Peng who whilst taking the MRT home, overheard a girl’s conversation on the phone with a colleague about her problems looking for a caricaturist to do a drawing for her boss. Out of goodwill, Siow Peng candidly approached the stranger and told her about this great caricaturist friend of hers. The next day, that girl called me and we are on. It was an A2 size black and white caricature drawing of 28 persons in her department including the boss who is leaving the company. She needed it rather urgently so I rushed the drawing in 2 days. It depicted the two other bosses trying to prevent the parting boss from poaching all the staff. When she received it, she was full of praises. Here’s the photos of the finished artwork and the process sketch. Studio work requires some planning through rough sketches unlike live work where I draw very fast, directly with a marker. Some word-of-mouth marketing indeed – Thank you Siow Peng.

Kids are lucky nowadays…After their ‘O’ level exams, some schools will organise prom nights for their students. I remember during my time in the late 80s, we do not have such a privilege. Here are two photos of my works in the prom night pre-dinner event for Ang Mo Kio Secondary School at Conrad Centennial hotel.
